A well-rounded Alpha Delt possesses a wealth of knowledge and skills beyond the confines of a textbook. Active members have maintained the success of their lecture nights, in which a designated active member offers to teach his fellow brothers a topic of his choosing. Topics can range from an hour-long mathematical explanation of “The Golden Ratio,” to a 15-minute demonstration of “How To Make The Perfect Long Island Iced Tea.” In an effort to share and spread the widespread knowledge and talents of all brothers, we would like to extend the call to all alumni in hopes that they will volunteer their time and pass on their experiences to the future of the fraternity. Tuesday, April 27th will mark the first Alumni Lecture Night in which alumnus Russell Flewellen ’05 will lead the actives in an outdoor session of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art. Any alumni interested in hosting their own lecture night may contact Nik VanDenMeerendonk at nikvanden@gmail.com.

Each winter break, the active members host a winter retreat at a luxurious cabin in which goals are established to maintain and build upon the overall development of the chapter. This winter, we created a set of core values that we believe either represent the personality and characteristics of the current members or represent traits that we should strive for to become even more successful. Since the completion of initiation, we have decided that this semester’s pledge class will have the privilege of creating reminders of these core values around the chapter house by painting them onto the walls of the second floor hallway. This way, we are reminded to live our lives according to these values each day. Congratulations to these four new members on their successful initiation and we wish them luck on their pledge project!

As the annual Spring Jam week approaches, the brothers of the Alpha Delta Phi, Minnesota Chapter are busy preparing for one of the University of Minnesota’s most highly anticipated events. Spring Jam brings together groups and organizations from all over the University to celebrate music, competition, philanthropy, warm weather, and the end of another school year. The event will occur April 20 through April 24, 2010. The overall theme of the week this year is “Into the Wild.” Alpha Delta Phi will be pairing up with other Greek houses Sigma Nu, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Alpha Gamma Delta, as a part of the “Born to Be Wild” team. The team will take part in the many competitions that will be occurring during the week. Among the many other events happening during the week, the team will be participating in the Greek Competition Kick-Off on Tuesday, the Greek Kickball Tournament on Wednesday, a community-wide service project in the Como area on Thursday, the Ballyhoo Competition on Friday, and a Battle of the Bands on Saturday. The brothers will be hosting their own philanthropy event as well on Saturday to raise money for Feed My Starving Children. The event will include food and a dunk tank All of the money raised at this event will be donated to the non-profit organization that provides meals for poverty stricken children across the globe. The week will be concluded with a performance by national act Gym Class Heroes on Saturday night. The brothers have been hard at work preparing for the week, and certainly look forward to another great Spring Jam!

On March 28th the active members invited their parents over for the biannual Parents’ Dinner. At this event we treated out parents to a pasta dinner and gave a small presentation that informed the parents on some of our goals and activities. The dinner also gave the parents and actives an opportunity to meet one another. Parents’ Dinner was headed by Brother Dustin Nides and was a great success.
